The Best RPGs of All Time that Every Gamer Should Experience

What makes video games more unique than other mediums, is that they allow players to become the hero.

While gamers can find this trait in most games, it’s most prevalent in Role Playing Games, RPGs.

There have been scores of thrilling RPGs released over the years. That said, there are a few that outshine the rest and remain must play adventures every gamer should experience at least once.

Here are a few of the best RPGs of all time.

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The original “The Legend of Zelda” set a precedent for the modern open-world game.

At the time, the map was wildly expansive, and there were no limits to where your wandering could take you. With “The Legend of Zelda,” gamers got their very first taste of what an adventure game could be.

The original graphics are more nostalgic than primitive looking. But despite its charm, any new gamer who doesn’t know the path by heart might find the gameplay confusing and, to that effect, frustrating.

“The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” is arguably the first sequel that captures the feeling of adventure the original game introduced.

Not only does “Breath of the Wild” feature a massive and breath-taking (pun intended) map, the game also introduced more RPG elements into the game. Thus, giving heroes everywhere the option of choosing how they go about defeating Ganon.

The Elder Scrolls III, IV, and V

“Elder Scrolls” fans can’t always agree which installment is best — but who said you only have to pick one game?

The “Elder Scrolls” franchise is one of the only series in existence where you can go ahead and skip the first few installments.

That said, the series’ third game, like the original “Legend of Zelda,” set a standard that modern RPGs are still trying to uphold.

There’s no argument, “The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind” is a masterpiece. While the graphics have not aged that well (especially when compared to the online version), the game still holds up and is a must-play for any RPG lover.

Bethesda followed up Morrowind with two more groundbreaking entries that gamers are still playing to this day.

While Oblivion is worth a few playthroughs, “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim” is a step above and remains a favorite title among gamers everywhere.

Dark Souls

Whether you enjoy a good challenge or enjoy putting yourself through emotional torture — the “Dark Souls” series is for you.

What stands out most about “Dark Souls” is how difficult and punishing the games can be. But, if you can manage to survive the endless waves of treacherous creatures, you’ll find that the lore in this franchise runs deep.

“Dark Souls” is a massively immersive game. This aspect could be due to you having to fight tooth and nail for every inch of progress and losing focus could cost you big time.

Every “Dark Souls” installment brings a something new and wonderfully terrifying with it. That said if you only have time to play through one, make it the most recent chapter, “Dark Souls III.”

Just make sure to read up on the lore before throwing yourself into the fray.
