Mules: The Complete Red Dead Redemption 2 Guide

No matter what you do, you will always need a way to get around in Red Dead Redemption 2. A horse could always work, but you don’t always have access to them. One of the best alternatives would be a mule. Like horses, mules can be ridden by players. Though they in most ways do not compete with the in game stats that horses have, they can come in handy in a pinch.
There are of course drawbacks to having a mule. Unlike horses, mules are unable to jump. While this is not true in real life, Rockstar did this to make mules much less desirable. Additionally, mules are significantly slower than horses. The fastest mules are only as fast as one star horses, meaning that even a slow horse would get you to your destination faster than a mule. On top of this, mules can only carry one person, meaning that when you hogtie someone, you cannot use it for transporting them. The last main drawback is that mules will wander greatly from where you left them after dismounting them.
Mules do have some advantages to horses though. They are better at manual labor. This is because they have tougher hooves and skin. As a result, they are much more durable, and can bear the loads of work more easily.
If you want to find the mule, it is most commonly located on farms and ranches. Because of this, one of the best places to look is around New Hanover. More specifically, looking in Emerald Ranch and Guthrie Farm would be good places to look. They can be bought, or stolen. Because they are domesticated already, you do not need to worry about taming them.
Hunting and killing the mules are not worth it, as there is nothing that you stand to gain by doing so. They do not provide meat or fur, and there is no legendary version. It is unnecessary to kill it to achieve the Unnatural Selection trophy, and because it is a domestic animal, harming it will decrease your honor and could attract wanted levels. It is necessary to study the mule though, as you will have to do so to receive the Zoologist achievement.
