Call of Duty

It Took Treyarch One Week to Nerf the MP5

Anyone who has played Call of Duty in recent years knows that the MP5 is always powerful. Not only is it one of the best SMGs in the game, it is often thought of as the best gun hands down. This was very evident in Modern Warfare 2019, as it was the most nerfed gun and was still the most widely used. One would have thought that after all they went through, they should have learned their lesson on how to make this weapon balanced, right?

Apparently not. On Wednesday, only five days after the game’s November 13th release date, Treyarch took it upon themselves to nerf the MP5. They announced in a tweet that they adjusted the initial recoil and reduced the base damage range by 33%. They then went on to joke that we should go out and try the other four SMGs in the game.

This weapon balance was only done for the MP5, no other weapons were changed in it. It took the rifle in an SMGs body and hopefully made it back down into an SMG: powerful but only in close ranges. This is the only patch that Treyarch intends on making until the release of the first season, expected to come in December.

While it is nice that Treyarch was so quick to fix the weapon, it is still frustrating to see them not learn from the mistakes of Activision. It is very likely that the MP5 will continue to dominate at medium ranges due to its high rate of fire and excellent accuracy. While this is not the end of the world, it still would be nice to not have to deal with the same annoying weapon for the second year in a row.
